French/Span/Nat Angolan troops were guarding the strategic Congolese port town of Matadi on Sunday after rebel forces trying to oust President Laurent Kabila deserted their positions. The Angolans took control of Matadi over the weekend after the rebels put up only light resistance before fleeing into the surrounding forest. The loss of Matadi, one of the last major rebel strongholds, is a blow to the insurgent force that just weeks ago seemed poised to take the capital, Kinshasa, about 350 kilometers to the northeast. This is the town of Matadi, just over 350 kilometers south-west of the Congolese capital Kinshasa. After a brief outburst of fighting on Sunday, it's now a government prize. SOUNDBITE: (French) "The armed forces have had to take control of the whole south western border area with Angola so that enemy elements don't return. Because there has been too much fighting between Matadi and Songololo. There has been a lot of resistance because the rebels have the support of U-N-I-T-A." SUPER CAPTION: Faustin Munene, Interior Minister D-R Congo Angolan troops are now guarding the strategic port which was one of the last major rebel strongholds. President Laurent Kabila's government in recent days has regained ground nearly as quickly as it was lost to the rebels - believed to be backed by neighboring Rwanda and Uganda. A fire at Matadi's port - the only major Congo River port serving inland southwestern Congo - raged in one warehouse, but the shipping facility was otherwise undamaged and city streets were deserted. Kabila's cabinet director, Abdoulaye Yerodia, earlier had described major destruction at the port saying it was a signal of what would come if rebel plans to take Kinshasa succeeded. Angolan troops teamed up with Kabila's beleaguered military more than a week ago and have helped turn the tide against the rebel force - a coalition army of ethnic Tutsi fighters and former soldiers in Kabila's army. Zimbabwe and Namibia are also fighting on behalf of Kabila. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) - (paraphrased) "The Angolan forces came to help the legitimate government of the Democratic Government of Congo. At the same time we are defending vital Angolan interests." SUPER CAPTION: General Joao de Matos, Chief of Staff Angolan Army Away from Matadi, the capital Kinshasa was quiet on Sunday after days of pitched combat on its western and eastern suburbs. The fighting in the capital left bodies scattered through the streets and triggered a vicious spree of lynching and summary executions. Officials say hundreds and perhaps thousands of rebel fighters have surrendered or been killed just in the past few days of fighting. Rebel leader Jean-Pierre Ondekane, however, remained defiant and insisted the fight to oust Kabila would continue. SOUNDBITE: (English) Josep Pique, Spanish Foreign Minister (Spain currently holds E.U. rotating presidency) "Israel needs the Palestinian Authority and its elected President, Yasser Arafat, as a partner to negotiate with, both in order to eradicate terrorism and to work towards peace. Their capacity to fight terrorism must not be weakened. But on the other hand, we say the Palestinian Authority and its elected President, Yasser Arafat, must do everything to put an end to terrorism and the armed Intifada, dismantle all the terrorist networks and arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of terrorist acts." 11. Various shots of conference hall STORYLINE: The European Union on Monday gave Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe a week to meet demands to improve his nation's human rights record, including unconditional acceptance of EU election monitors, or face economic and diplomatic sanctions. And, in an uncharacteristically strong statement, the 15 EU ministers reiterated their support for Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat as a peace partner. Speaking to the reporters after the EU meeting, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said Mugabe had failed so far to restore the rule of law, press freedoms and independence of the judiciary and said "targeted sanctions" would be implemented if no improvement is evident by February 3. By that date, the EU wants European observers in Zimbabwe to monitor the campaign for the March 9-10 presidential elections. Mugabe, whose ZANU-FP party holds 93 of the 150 parliamentary seats, wants to extend his 22-year rule. Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi came out winning after a run-in with his European Union partners after he appointed Gianfranco Fini - a former Fascist - to a key EU panel. Berlusconi, attending his first EU meeting since he made himself foreign minister as well as premier, insisted that Fini represent Italy in a Convention to prepare a far-reaching reform of the EU. And in spite of growing U.S. frustration with Yasser Arafat, European Union foreign ministers confirmed their full support for the Palestinian leader. They also criticized the Israeli government for damaging EU-funded projects in the Palestinian territories. The move to reiterate backing for the Palestinian president comes amid fears in Europe that U.S. President George W. Bush will cut ties with Arafat and stop mediating in the conflict. Eyes for Zimbabwe' & Cecilie Lundgreen This is my story.... by Cecilie Lundgreen All my life I had been doing things for my family, my friends and of course myself. I had never really paid much attention to others in need. In February 2001 I was asked by Reeve Nield and Laurette Maritz to come to Zimbabwe and take part in their charity project 'Eyes for Zimbabwe', their goal was to 'give sight' to those suffering from blindness due to cataracts. I accepted and thought it would be a great African adventure and a good cause. In April 2001 I spent two weeks with nine other 'Ladies European Tour' Professionals in beautiful Zimbabwe, playing golf in fund-raising golf Pro-am's which raised money to purchase the MUCH needed medicines, medical supplies and equipment. All of which was to help blind Zimbabweans whom I had never met.... I loved it! I loved the country! I loved the people and I loved being there! My life has not been the same since..... After that initial great experience in Zimbabwe, I decided that I could certainly do something similar in Norway to raise money for the cause. So I contacted a friend of mine, Tor Nygård and asked for his help. I invited friends of mine from the 'Ladies European Tour' to donate their time to play in a Pro-am, Norwegian golfers were given the unique opportunity to play golf with world class Lady Golf Professionals. The money raised was to purchase further medical supplies for 'Eyes for Zimbabwe'! My first 'Eyes for Zimbabwe Norway' was a great success with over US$20 000 raised and loads of medical supplies donated by The Norwegian Army which was shipped free of charge to Zimbabwe ('DHL International' donated US$15 000+ in shipping costs). We were able to give sight to 1000 blind Zimbabweans! I was so proud of our accomplishment and so grateful to everyone who assisted in 'making' it a terrific success. I traveled to Zimbabwe to see the Norwegian supplies arrive and be distributed to eye camps throughout Zimbabwe. It was fantastic to know that through such simple means and a slight effort we were able to 'give' sight to hundreds of blind Zimbabweans, Babies, Children and Adults. I knew we could do better...
